Professional Graduate Master's Degree Program in Genetic Counseling
The Institute of Biosciences at USP (IBUSP) hosts five academic graduate programs, all of them with good or excellent punctuation grades issued from credible government quality-controlling entities. The Biology/Genetics Academic Graduate Program, active since 1970, has been responsible for the high level training of hundreds of professionals, several of whom are working today in human and medical genetics and in genetic counseling. The professional graduate master's degree program in genetic counseling was created and is supervised by a staff of professors and researchers with solid scientific output and broad teaching experience in human and medical genetics, already tested with success in IBUSP’s academic graduate programs. In addition, the Human Genome and Stem-Cell Research Center, besides providing a wide range of genetic tests and genetic counseling sessions related to a large constellation of diseases, creates an ideal environment for the development of practice and training of young professionals. The program was set up taking into account important health policies currently in development in Brazil and since its very beginning counts on a body of faculty advisors with extensive experience acquired over more than four decades of training of MSc and PhD students. One of the strongest points of the program is the mandatory supervised internship in genetic counseling, within the facilities of the Human Genome Center and partner institutions, located at different services and departments of the School of Medicine and other first-grade institutions. IBUSP, where the program is held, has a history of several genetic counseling services since 1969, with over 60,000 families benefiting from its work over the years. Very few services in the country have such a vast experience in genetic counseling, which in the case of our program is associated with an educational institution with a large and successful proven experience in providing excellent quality graduate education.
